Advancements in medical research have now made it possible for many HIV positive women to give birth to HIV free babies. Here are the major prevention measures that are taken to avoid the transmission during pregnancy:

• Take the tests earlier to detect the infection earlier. HIV tests could be required more than one time during the pregnancy.
• Visit your doctor regularly to monitor your and the baby's health
• Take the HIV medication regularly without fail in case the mother has tested positive for the infection
• The C- section or Cesarean delivery is advised to help prevent transmission of the infection
• Breastfeeding is to be avoided as it could also transmit the infection

If either partner has HIV, that partner should take HIV medicines as per prescription to stay healthy and prevent transmission.
