What is HIV during Pregnancy

• HIV during pregnancy is infection with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) in a woman while she is pregnant
• Women with HIV or AIDS may transmit the disease/infection to their child during pregnancy, childbirth and even while breastfeeding.
• The transmission of the infection could be prevented from mother to the child by appropriate treatment
• The treatment could be initiated in women before, during, and after pregnancy
• The born child is also given the medication temporarily to reduce the risk of infection
• Since HIV may also spread through breast milk, mothers are advised to not breastfeed the babies and take up alternate feeding methods like bottle feeding or vati- spoon feeding

It is advisable that all women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should do HIV testing and should encourage their partners also to get tested for HIV.
